Can Discoloration Of Elbows With Occasional, Severe Pain Upon Straightening Indicate Bursitis?

I m experiencing a purple-red discoloration of my elbows bilaterall everyday. Some days worse than others, occasionally with extreme pain on straightening, if I ve slept with my arms flexed. Occasional swelling in the joints. Could this be bursitis? If so, how can I resolve this? I hate to wear short sleeved clothing since I ve had numerous people comment on it.

Hello,

The following are few conditions that seem to fit your symptoms:

1) Olecranon(elbow) bursitis

2) Elbow overuse injuries like tennis elbow, Golfer’s elbow

3) Any fractures

4) Gout

5) Rheumatoid arthritis

Among the above, bursitis is very common. But a detailed examination of the affected joints by an orthopaedic specialist is necessary.

As both of your joints are affected, I suspect a systemic condition like rheumatoid arthritis or gout.

So, you need to get evaluated for the same.

1) Rheumatoid factor,c-reactive protein, ESR
2) Serum uric acid levels

If necessary, the specialist may even aspirate the fluid from the elbow joint. So, my sincere advice is not to neglect and see an orthopaedic expert.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
