Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, my dad ( 85+) in Indai had recent bilateral knee surgery done. after 2 weeks he went through complications of pneumonia and stomach dis tensions and had to be admitted to ICU. He is now out of ICU but is not opening his eyes but is responsive and recognizes people by voice. Dr is saying that this is due to electrolyte imbalance ... Low on Potassium . About 2.4.. He was low on sodium but has recovered . Question: is he in coma stage? Why do you suggest we should check or do more?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Major query here is the surgery was performed under general or spinal anesthesia? Very vital information is not given.
He is not in coma as he is recognizing people by voice. You should go in further depth for all blood gas analysis with MRI of the brain, spinal fluid tapping for further evaluations and the best possible management for the dad.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Purva Patel
