Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have type ll diabetes (diagnosed about a year ago - previoiusly gestational diabetic) and have been experiencing slow brain function lately: typing skills significantly reduced, confused thoughts, etc. Can elevated sugar levels cause these symptoms?
thanks for writing YES, elevated sugar levels can cause these symptoms
explanation; Memory loss in diabetes can be a short term problem brought on by too low or high blood glucose levels.yes, low blood sugar is a more common cause of confusion than high blood sugar and diabetics on treatment are more prone to decreased blood sugar levels.
Diabetes can increase the risk of developing long-term memory problems if blood glucose levels are less well controlled. High blood glucose levels, over a number of years, can damage the nerves, including those of the brain, which can increase the risk of dementia
your duration of diabetes and your current treatment may help me decide the cause
hope this was useful do let me know if you have any further queries.
