Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Extreme Trauma Cause Burning Vagina Without Any Infections?
My mother is 75. she just lost my father 6mo. ago...Hardly eats and drinks and has lost 25lbsin 6 mo. has had burning in the vaginal area for months and cries all the time... we fear dementia? what could be causing her burning...Tests were taken,,,and there were no infections.
Thank you for the details, I really understand your concern.
It's atrophic vaginitis, which is inflammation (without infection) of the vaginal epithelium due to a lack of estrogen support.
The lack of estrogen is due to postmenopause (your mom is 75 years old).
I prescribe to my patients with this diagnosis Calamine lotion (applied externally for local symptomatic relief) and Conjugated estrogen (Premarin) cream 0.625 mg/g; use 0.5- to 1.0-g applicator inserted intravaginally at bedtime every night for 1 to 2 weeks, then every other night for 1 to 2 weeks, then as needed. Hygiene is also important due to high risk for vaginal infection after menopause.
Hardly eating/drinking and weight loss in this age requires further evaluation and diagnostic procedures, but also may be related to depresion after husband lost.
