Can Gangrene On The Leg Spreading To The Hip Be Treated?

a person I know whose husband has just been sent home with bad gangrene. They say it has spread so much in the leg & on up in his hip & side that it would be no use to cut all of that out. It wouldn t stop it. So basically they are sending him home to die, like you would with terminal cancer. I was curious to kknow what kind of life expectancy he has to look for. and also what all will his wife have to do

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Gangrene, if it is spreading, needs to be treated immediately as an emergency. Usually, amputation of the affected part after the clinical assessment is the treatment.

If the infection has not spread to the blood and other parts of the body (sepsis), the prognosis seems to be good. If the infection has spread and has resulted in sepsis, then the prognosis is poor as it would cause multi-organ failure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
