Can Gout Cause Peripheral Neuropathy?

My husband was just diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, affecting his feet. Over the course of about 20 years, he had repeated episodes of gout in his big toes. He s had it so severe that it has deformed the joints. He has been on allopurinol (sp?) for about 8 years with no episodes of gout. Can gout cause peripheral neuropathy?

Gout is unlikely to be the cause for peripheral neuropathy.

Gout is a type of arthritis which occurs when high uric acid levels in blood form hard crystals in your joints resulting in inflammatory reaction.

The most common sign of gout is a nighttime attack of swelling, tenderness, redness, and sharp pain in the big toe which is commonly affected. However, it can affect other joints as well.

Peripheral neuritis is unlikely to be caused by gout. It can be due to deficiencies of certain vitamins like Vitamin B6 (Pyidoxine), Thiamine, or Vitamin B12.

Your husband needs to be examined by a doctor and certain lab tests may be done to find out the exact cause of peripheral neuritis which can be treated by vitamin supplements.
