Can Hot Steam And Menthol Help To Relieve Catarrh?

I have had catarrh for 3 months nothing seems to clear it. I have had 2 antibiotics nasal spray without success. I am now trying hot steam and menthol can this help? I can feel a blockage in my left ear, is that caused by the Catarrh. Please help Age. 65, height 5 9 b12 deficient, rheumatic fever Age 12

Hi,

As per your complain Catarrah can occur due to causes like Sinusitis, Upper Respiratory Tract infection, acid reflux, allergies etc. I would suggest you to consult an otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like PNS View x-ray, nasal endoscopy, upper G.I Endoscopy etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly. In case of infection you can be advised to take a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkiller, decongestants oral as well as nasal spray, antiallergics and mucolytics.

As of now you can take anti-allergics like Levocetirizine, Mucolytics like Ambroxol. If it is due to acid reflux antacids and proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole and diet modifications can be advised. In case of allergies anti-allergics and preventing exposure to allergen can be advised. Do warm saline gargles and steam inhalations. Limit exposure to dust and also avoid chilled foods. Sip on warm water.
