Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Infection From Cat Spread In Humans And Other Animals ?
I do not knowif you can help me this is about my cat he was diagnosed with Tritrichomonas foetus . He came from a cattery about 2 months ago. I do not have any other cats and he is only kept indoors. He has has loose and foul stool since we got him but I thought maybe it was his food. My concerns are I have a 4 and 6 year old, can they get it? I also have two dogs? The vet want to prescribe ronidazole (which from what I read is lethal to humans). If this were your cat and your family what would you do. Should I put him in an animal hospital to be treated or quarantine him in a room of our home??
I will try my best to provide you with best possible professional recommendations to your questions.
Even though i am not an veterinarian, as i have cat in my home, i like provide you with the information that i have got.
From the information i got it suggests the long-term prognosis for infected cats is good, and that they will eventually overcome the infection.
The organism is resistant to most traditionally used anti-protozoal drugs such as fenbendazole and metronidazole.
A recent study by Dr Jody Gookin at the North Carolina State University (who has performed most of the work on this infection in cats) identified that ronidazole (an antibiotic similar but not the same as metronidazole) has good efficacy against T. foetus infection in cats (JVIM, 2005 19: 436; JVIM, 2006 20: 536-543). From limited studies its use appears to be relatively safe in cats, although a small number of patients have developed neurological signs.
Yet again, I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Regards
