Any kind of irritant fumes when inhaled cause swelling of the airways- usually the nose but sometimes can cause swelling in the throat and lower airways. typically the inflammation from the irritant fumes causes lots of secretions and people cough, have running nose and in more severe cases can have wheezing and trouble breathing. the most important first step is to get away from the irritating agent, then, making sure you wash the face and eyes with water to remove the agent. finally you should avoid re exposure to the agent. if you need to use it again would recommend at least a face mask that covers the nose and protective eye wear. if symptoms persist even after stopping exposure, then you should see a doctor.
