Can Intake Of Ortho Evra Cause Side Effects Like Diarrhea And Nausea?

I m 17 and just started the Ortho Evra patch yesterday. This is the first form of birth control I have ever taken. This morning (around 8) I had diarrhea and nausea that s lasted all day so far. At about noon I vomited. Are these normal side effects? Or should I be worried?

Hi and welcome to HCM. This patch contains combination hormone medication and is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 2 hormones: a progestin (norelgestromin) and an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol). It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. Some common side effects are Skin irritation at the application site, nausea, vomiting, headache, bloating, breast tenderness, swelling of the ankles/feet (fluid retention), or weight change may occur. Vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting) may occur, especially during the first few months of use. Nausea is a side effect of this patch, but diarrhea is less likely. I advice you to take tab sporolac 1-1-1 after food for 3 dyas, tab omez d 1-0-0 before breakfast for 5 days. and avoid spicy food. If diarrhea and vomiting persists please see a local doctor. All the best

Dr Santosh
