Can Medicines For Attention Deficit Disorder Cause Personality Disorders?

My granddaughter age ten has been put on a medication for attention deficit disorder. She is angry a lot and acting out. Saying she doesn't know who she can trust. She wants to run away from home. She doesn't want to live with her mother. Her parents are divorced. My son her father is an alcoholic. He mother is very high strung and has often said her children have medical issues that they don't have. My concern here is that my granddaughter has been put on a medication first that she doesn't need and second that is changing her personality. There is a family history of bi-polar, depression and anxiety that I am aware of. Could this medication be hurting her rather than helping?
