Can My Mother Use Her Arm Again After Ischemic Stroke?

My 87 year old mother had a massive left-side ischemic stroke and was down for about three days before she was found. I am bewildered as she is alert, can communicate with us, slurred speech which has gotten better over the last few days, and now can hold her right arm up. She was admitted on 2/11. My question: Is it possible that she will regain use of her right arm? She lives on Kauai, so the treatments are limited. What can I expect?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your mother's symptoms. I am glad to note that she is recovering.

Most people recover from stroke, however, the recovery is often incomplete or partial.

Large size of stroke and older age are poor prognostic factors for outcomes after stroke.

However, recovery can be improved with physiotherapy and exercises.

In addition, her risk factors such as high sugar, BP and cholesterol should be controlled.

Aspirin and statins should be continued.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
