Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Shingles is reactivation of the chicken pox virus and can cause many symptoms in a patient. This happens due to reactivation of dorsal nerve root ganglia of nerves and therefore there is intense burning pain before the rashes come out. The pains can be along one side of the abdomen in a band pattern. Some patients have symptoms like constipation and abdominal discomfort for days before the rashes appear.

If blisters have started appearing then he should go to the doctor and take prescription for antiviral medicines. This is to be started within 72 hours of the appearance of rashes to control the blisters and discomfort.

Calamine lotion can be applied over the abdomen to reduce the burning and itching over rashes. The pain will stay for weeks in some people and there is continuous pain then please tell him to get neurogenic pain relief medicine form the doctor. Please do not worry.
