Can Patent Ductus Arteriosus Affect A Person With History Of Polio?

Can someone with post-polio and legs with partial paralysis have PDA ? I have some of the symptoms like very cold legs, sitting only, pain, etc. I can feel, but since I have nerve damage, the muscles can t be stimulated, because the nerves don t work in terms of sending the message to move. I ve been like this since I was 16 months old; I wasn t able to move anything except my head/neck when diagnosed, but in rehab at a hospital in Gonzales, Texas (Warm Springs) I learned to use my arms and after 9-10 months learned to sit up eventually gaining back some muscle use. I also learned to walk with back brace, long leg braces, and paralell bars. , I had surgery at 13 to straighten my feet in order to be able to walk correctly. I taught school for 30 years in my braces, and now at 66 am retired (2000). I broke my good leg-the femur, (a little better than the bad leg) and was told that if I fall again and break it, it cannot be fixed that I should stay in my wheelchair from here on. That was 12 years ago. Now, my leg muscles have atrophied and swell and often hurt or feel numb. Just wondering what you may think.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Patent ductus arteriosus may affect anyone with or without polio. However I do not see any indication of that in your history. Those symptoms you mention of cold legs can be due to many causes and PDA isn't certainly a common one, not in the absence of other symptoms like breathing and blood pumping issues. On the other hand they are commonly found after polio, they may also worsen at your age due to post polio syndrome, so having an obvious cause I do not think there is any reason to investigate after such an uncommon one such as PDA.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
