Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My perimenopause began three years ago. I have always inclined toward being constipated. Now all of a sudden in last few months I ve noticed a change. I find relief faster and quicker. Although I m glad about that because I feel lighter yet my stools smell as in diarrhoea and I tend to let off noxious gas too often and with little control. It is obviously a problem. Am I right in concluding it is connected to menopausal changes? If not, what else could it be? I feel fine otherwise. And is there something I can do to avoid it?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history perimenopause and developing constipation which got relieved with normal looking stool passing easily but the smell is like that of diarrhea. Yes, the smell is indicating sub-clinical infection of the intestinal tract. I would advise you the following in such a situation: Tests of stool for 3 consecutive days. Tests of blood for diabetes, thyroid and routine. A course of an antibiotic, metronidazole if there is evidence of infection. Activated charcoal tablets and probiotics. Make a list of the foods and beverages that you have noticed to instigate or enhance the problems of any sort, put on the wall and stop these strictly to avoid the recurrence of the problems.
