Can Physical Therapy Heal Deformation In Foot And Ankle, Swelling In Legs And Torn Ligaments?
My husband's left foot and ankle are becoming deformed. Foot appears to be twisting so that he walks on the outside edge of it and ankle is swollen and not aligned with leg - almost clubfooted. He has opted for a fitted brace, currently being made. But he fell, injuring his right knee - and surgery has revealed torn meniscus, both knees, torn ligaments, all very old injuries. Left ankle has become crucial to balance as right leg will be unusable for at least 3 months. While the re-attached tendon and large muscles heal. He will eventually be able to bend this knee with intense therapy, but in order to get him home he has to be able to balance on his left. Our house is in a fairly steep hill with at least 15 steps.
Hello. Thanks for writing to us. Physical therapy can cause a decrease in the deformity by maintaining the tone of the muscles. It can also help in healing of only partial thickness tears of the ligaments and rehabilitation. I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
