Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I;ve heard prednisone can be helpful for treating poison ivy (mine is still erupting and spreading after 12 days, and the worst area is my derriere, What would prednisone do, and what would be the side-effects? I m a 56 yr old woman weighing 135 lbs, in good health with no other medications or conditions.
Steroid (Prednisone)- apart from an antihistaminic drug, such as, Benadryl- does have a role in treating eruptions caused by poison ivy.
You may therefore take Tab Prednisolone 30mg once a day after breakfast and reduce the dose by 5mg everyday, so that you complete the course in six days.
In addition, take Tab Benadryl one tablet twice daily for 5-7 days.
Application of an antiseptic cream/ointment 3-4 times/day on the eruptions will prevent secondary bacterial infection.
