Can Radiation Damage A Stent Placed In Vascular System?

Hi. I am currently receiving high dose radiation after surgery to remove an adenocarcenoma in a lymph node under my arm and in my chest. About five years ago I had stage 4 ovarian cancer and had a PICC line placed in my left arm to start immediate chemo while I waited to be scheduled for a port. The vein was damaged and collapsed and the PICC line removed. A stent was placed to keep the damaged vascular system in my arm open and flowing. Today after my treatment a large bubble (that is the only way I know how to describe it) formed on my arm where my stent is at. It streaked red down my bicep. I used ice and it 90% went away by this evening. Is it possible that the radiation can damage the stent?

Hi Dear !! Thanks for your query to HCM.
I reviewed facts of your query in context to your health issues and feel concerned about them.

My Primary Opinion-
In My opinion, in the given situation you seem to suffer from-
Thrombo-phlebitis with Radiation damage oedema.
This is the cause of the large swelling after radiation treatment in your case.
By radiation Stent would remain patent and would remain functional in your case, but the tissues around it of the vessels, would get damaged and would add to the thrombo-phlebitis caused from chemo drugs.

Do's -
Get Cold packs locally.
Apply thrombophobe oint locally.
Tab Ibuprofen-400 mg x 2-3 times a day x 5 days.
Tab Antibiotic-if need be to avoid infection in the damaged tissue of the leg.
You may need antibiotics to control the abscess possibility in your case, as thing developed after strong chemo treatment.

If no relief-
Rest /Elevation to the affected arm.
Get Local X-ray to examine the position of stent
And Consult with Cardiologist who placed that stent and to treat it accordingly.
Other causes need to be ruled out, after getting more details from you.

Next Appointment-
After 1 week-to resolve your problem
