Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can hypophosphatemia result from short bowel syndrome? My husband, now 68 lost his terminal ileum and illeal secal valve in a 1991 bowel resection for Crohn s disease. He has been Vitamin D deficient and injections have finally brought the levels to a normal range. But he has constant spasms in both thighs and right hand tremor. Could he have encepholopathy from low phosphate?
Short bowel syndrome can cause impaired absorption of minerals and vitamins. If there is any deficiency, supplementation must be provided. Encephalopathy is unlikely. Consult a physician and get evaluated.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care

Dr. Shinas Hussain
