Can Spotting Even After Taking Birth Control Be Due To Infection?

Yes hello. I have been on implanon birth control for about 9 months and just this past month i have been spotting.......the whole month. But the past 2-3 weeks the discharge has been real dark brown and and carries an odor. Could this be an infection?
