Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I m on aizthromyzin for 5 days for an ear infection. I m also on lutera birth control. Do the antibiotics alter the effectiveness of my birth control? And if so for how long would I need to use an alternative method of birth control until it is safe to have unprotected sex? Thanks
I understand your concern. Do not worry. Azithromycin will not affect lutera. Following drugs affects lutera: penicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, tetracycline, minocycline, metronidazole, and nitrofurantoin. So you are completely safe, no need to take alternative birth control. Take remaining pill on specific time everyday.
Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.
Related to your question it is known that Interaction between these drugs is moderate. Antibiotics such as azithromycin may reduce the effects of ethinyl estradiol in some women. If you are using ethinyl estradiol for birth control, you may be at increased risk for pregnancy or breakthrough bleeding. You should talk to your doctor to determine if you should use an alternative or additional form of birth control during or after treatment with azithromycin.
I hope my answer help you. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Monika Dede
