Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking the medication Suboxone for almost 12 months now. I ve been tapering myself down, & am currently at 2mg/day. Here s my dilemma-- I m scheduled for laporoscopic surgery in about 20 days (Feb 15). I ve tried talking to my gynecologist (the Dr. performing surgery) regarding necessary precautions to take, but he told me to speak with the Dr. prescribing the Suboxone. So I spoke to that Dr. & he advised me it would be fine to take Sub up to the day of surgery, & then continue to use it as often as needed for pain. Is this correct? I m worried about not getting adequate pain relief. I m also concerned because I was under the impression that the Suboxone could cause me to go into harsh withdrawals if taken too soon with other opiates. But won t I be getting other opiates while sedated during & after surgery? Please help!!
You can continue Suboxone until you are scheduled for surgery. Further requirement of opioids will be decided on your pain levels post surgery. Hence, do not worry. After the post operative period, opioids will gradually be reduced / withdrawn with substitution therapy.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
