Hi, My name is Colleen, I am 55 years old. I was diagnosed with a thyroid problem about two years ago. I was watching the doctors show about the kale that might make it worse. I have a smoothie every morning with blueberries, strawberries, bananas, kale and spinach is this to much. I am taking 50 mcg of levothyroxine.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Levothyroxine is safe to take if you have hypothyroidism. That is the medicine of choice. Kale has good amount of iodine in it. Excess iodine is not good for thyroid and can cause thyroid dysfunction. At your age around 150 mcg of iodine a day is sufficient.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Binu Parameswaran Pillai
