Can The Dosage Of Xanax XR Taken For Agoraphobia And Anxiety Be Doubled?

I am currently taking Xanax XR 2mg twice a day. I usually take in just it in the morning. I take it for severe panic disorder and agoraphobia. When I take it I still have some residual anxiety during the day. I used to take 1mg of Xanax IR. Is it possible to take the XR in the morning and then take an additional IR several hours later if the anxiety is still persisting?

Xanax is alprazolam and this is a benzodiazepine drug. The drug has high abuse potential and so one should not self medicate himself with alprazolam. The drug help to decrease symptoms of anxiety but it don't help in complete treatment. You are already taking 4 mg of this drug in a day so I would suggest you to not to take more of drug by self medication. Consult your psychiatrist to decrease the dose of drug. Other medicines like Propranolol, Atenolol can prove useful to reduce the symptoms of anxiety. These drugs also don't carry abuse potential. For proper treatment of anxiety and agoraphobia medicines like SSRIs are used. Fluoxetine has good result in panic and anxiety.
