Can Vitamin B1 Supplement Be Taken While On Metformin And Glipizide?
I am a diabetic - type 2. I currently take Metformin, Glipizide & Januvia all at different times. I also take a multivitamin but it does not contain vitamin B1, which I heard that Metformin depletes. Can I take a seperate B1 capsule to support my health or should I just rely on the multivitamin I all ready take?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Multivitamin drug alone is sufficient. Metformin is the most commonly prescribed drug to treat Type-2 diabetes. It can interfere with the absorption of Vitamin B-12 from the intestines, and this can lead to a deficiency of this essential vitamin in some individuals causing anemia.
Metformin may also have the adverse interaction with Vitamin B-3 (Niacin) resulting in the deficiency of Vitamin B-3. Since multivitamin contains all the essential vitamins, so you can rely on it to prevent the deficiency states. Metformin does not interact with Vitamin B-1.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
