Cause For Repeated Frozen Shoulder? How To Rectify It?

HI, I am over 50, female and do not have diabetes or any other serious health problems except... In 2000 I developed frozen shoulder and the pain lasted about 3 months before thawing. About 2005 I developed severe dibilitating frozen shoulder in my right which lasted almost 2 years. I now have frozen shoulder in my left, again, which is causing me sleepless nights and pain although I am continuing to use my shoulder within and slightly in my pain range. It is slowly starting to stiffen up regardless. I am a meat inspector and have been for the last 17 years. The first two, I believe were caused by repetitive strain. Now, with the change in our jobs I don t understand this one. There is still repetition in my job but not like there used to be. Why do I continue to get frozen shoulder????

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
It is true that your earlier 2 episodes of frozen shoulder could be due to recurrent trauma ( due to your job). however, there are other conditions in which frozen shoulder can recur. These include hypo and hyperthyroidism, neuropathy, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, chronic airway obstruction, various medications and ischemic heart disease.
The only way to rule these out is to do a complete evaluation ( with a history, physical exam and some tests). Then we should pretty much know why you keep getting this again and again.
Once we know the cause, appropriate treatment can be started.
Hope this helps
