Child. Yellowish Pus Filled Bumps Throughout Scalp, Swollen Base Of Hairline. History Of Having Bad Cold. Advice
3 year old niece has yellowish pus filled bumps throughout scalp and the base of her hairline appears to be swollen. My mom said a week ago my niece had a bad cold. The child doesn't have medical insurance so she hasn't been to the Dr.. Does she need immediate medical assistance? Is there anything that can be purchased over the counter to get the infection out of her system
The general rule is that pus has to be drained out of the body from any where it is found.
Your niece has pyo-dermatitis and the fact that it is on the scalp which is closer to the brain makes it severe as a possible complication could be meningitis or brain abscess.
Ideally, a sample of the pus has to be sent to the laboratory for microscopy and antibiogram in a bit to identify the causative agent which is likely Staphylococcus or Streptococcus and to get antibiotics which could be effective against the germ. With the result the most appropriate antibiotics will then be prescribed.
In addition to the antibiotics, effective drainage and cleaning has to be done. This could be done with soap and clean warm water with a little compression.
Antibiotics are not sold as over the counter and so you will definitely need to see a doctor for the prescription of antibiotics. I usually prescribe drugs such as cloxacillin or amoxicillin+clavulanic acid in such cases.
