Child Born With Hydronephrosis And A Duplicated System. Surgery To Remove Extra Ureters Done. Frequent UTIs, Ketones And Occult Blood In Urine. What To Do?
Hi, my daughter 2 was born with severe bilateral hydronephrosis with a duplicated system. Urologist did surgery to remove the extra ureters as well as did partial bilateral nephrectomies at 9 month old. She kept getting UTIs so she went through the reimplantation surgery to correct a ballooning in her ureters and bladder (ureterocele). She is now getting more UTIs--last one was enterococcus . Now that is gone but she has enterobacter cloecae with trace amounts of ketones and occult blood and her RBC count is high. Her appointment with urologist isn t for another couple weeks and the antibiotic she is on is not helping (Suprax). Her last ultrasound was fine and her VCUG came back with no reflux. What can this mean at this point?
Hi ,
Thank you for your query.
its is unfortunate that your child had an anatomical defect and has undergone reimplantation surgery. These are usually symptoms of recurrent UTI that needs to be addressed. Recurrent UTI is a common problem in these children and they often are drug resistant UTi s.The culture report should guide your doctor to choose the specific antibiotic.Get in touch with your doctor. The child may need a long time antimicrobial therapy.Hope this answers your query.Wishing your child a speedy recovery.Have a nice day.
