Child Has Avulsion Fracture Of Lesser Trochanter. X-rays Still Shows Bone Fragments. Time To Heal?

My son has avulsion fracture of lesser trochanter. Everyone thought he pulled hip flexor and break not found for 4 weeks. It has now been 9 weeks and x-rays still shows bone fragments. I think initial x-ray showed callus and now looks more like other side trochanter with half moon piece above and fragments. Worried about healing time, son wants to enjoy summer and return to soccer. Shouldn't this be further along? MD says does not need to see again. OK no x-ray showing bones solid? Worried about risk of re-injury.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. Isolated avulsion fracture of lesser trochanter is not at all a matter of concern. It looks from your description that the fracture is still consolidating with visible callus.
If your son is performing all his ADL's (activities of daily living) without complaining of pain over the upper medial aspect of thigh, then i think he can return to soccer.
If he is still having pain, let him wait for few more weeks so that solid union of the fracture occurs.
Hope this helps
