Child Has Cold, Temperature, Swollen Gland Before Ear. Took Antibiotics, Problem Persists. Due To Teething?

My six year old has had a cold and temperature and one day woke up with a swollen gland before his ear, then a gland on that side of the neck became swollen too. We took him to the doc who said his ears were inflamed and prescribed antibiotics . He went back to the doctor to be checked again a couple of days later and they were fine so was his throat but the glands were still swollen. Now, after one week from finishing the course of antibiotics his glands are still the same. He feels well and eats well. He is teething though on both sides. Could the reason of his still swallen glands be related to that? Thank you in advance for a reply...

ENT Specialist 's  Response
hello and welcome to HCM,

I have understood your concern about the swollen glands in the ear/ neck area of your son.
In this age the swollen glands can be due to many causes and since you mentioned that he had a cold and fever, I would assume it may be a result of that infection. These swellings usually take a couple of weeks to disappear completely and you should definitely wait for them to do so.

Meanwhile have an ENT consult to know the status of his tonsils which is also one of the leading cause of infections in this age group.

If the swelling does not subside then you may consult your ENT again so that he can advice tests such as FNAC or CT to get to know the problem better and give you a directed treatment.

take care and give your child only warm fluids

ps: His teething is usually unrelated to the glands or lymph nodes

Hi,
As he is alright with temperature and cold, nothing to worry.
Enlarge lymph nodes may remain for few days more after infection cures.
Avoid cold drinks and junk food.
