My baby had low birth weight (2kg). Im extracting breastmilk for her. She is 3 months old now weighing 3.86 kg. i need to give her a supplent as i dont have enough breastmilk. I decided on nan 1 but dont know how much to give her. As the tin works according to the babys age and not the weight. My baby drinks between 100 and 120ml breastmilk 6 times a day. The tin suggets 175 ml 5 times a day. I am confused! Please help
Hi,
Welcome to HCM
You give your baby some feeds of breast milk 100-120 ml and some feeds of Nan also 120 ml per feed to begin with.
If the baby finishes drinking all the 120 ml amount ,next time onwards prepare 150 ml and see.
The number of times of feeds per day is the same and depends on the amount of breast milk available.
You can give once Nan and the next time your milk and repeat like this.
How you dilute Nan is ,one level measure of powder to 30 ml of water (1 oz).
So for120 ml water you will put 4 level scoops of powder.
Hope this makes it clear for you!
All the best.
Your daughter is gaining weight adequately as a child should gain 500-600 gm. per month. Hence, seeing her birth weight her weight of 3.86 Kg at three months is absolutely fine.
At this age you should not be extracting the breast milk and feeding the baby. Let the baby suck herself. The reason why she is not able to suck is that she is having nipple confusion while feeding both from a bottle and breast. If you are keen to breast feed then you need to give the supplement feed with a spoon or with a bottle in which the nipple has a very small hole.
Regarding the quantity of the supplement milk being fed to the baby, please do not take the instructions on the tin literally as every baby has his/her own requirements and frequency of taking feeds. Secondly, the instruction is for an average normal baby weighing around 2500-3000 gm. at birth.
I hope I have answerred your query to your satisfaction.
