Child Has Low Hemoglobin Levels. Peripheral Blood Film Shows Anisopoikilocytocis Microcytes. Interpretation?
Hi,a kenyan boy aged 13years was diagnosed with low HB levels of 7. The doctor recommended they do a peripheral blood film. the results are out but the doctor is too busy at the moment to review the results. Kindly help. Here are the results: RBC-anisopoikilocytocis microcytes, target cells tear drops, platelets increased in number. Please assist on the interpretation. Thankyou
Anisopoikilocytosis - means increased variability of RBC (Red Blood cells) present in blood film. Target cells and Tear drop cells are different shapes of RBC (variability).
These means, the child has severe anaemia may be due to iron deficiency (most probable), or Thalassemia (minor).
hello there, it seem to be case of nutritional anemia (precisely iron deficiency anemia) on blood picture, but need to be verified with complete blood count like Hemoglobin, TRBC, MCV, MCH, MCHC and platelet count. as it also need to be differentiated from thalassemia before starting any treatment. so you must consult your doctor who will be in a better position to correlate thee reports with the physical condition of the child and prescribe medicines as required. iron deficiency anemia is a treatable condition so there is nothing to worry about it. thank you

Child Has Low Hemoglobin Levels. Peripheral Blood Film Shows Anisopoikilocytocis Microcytes. Interpretation?
Hi It would be better to interpret the result if you provided with the complete details of the investigation. These are the interpretation of the information you provided. Hemoglobin 7gm / dl - severe anaemia Microcytes - Small sized RBC Anisopoikilocytosis - means increased variability of RBC (Red Blood cells) present in blood film. Target cells and Tear drop cells are different shapes of RBC (variability). These means, the child has severe anaemia may be due to iron deficiency (most probable), or Thalassemia (minor). The child may require blood transfusion (if symptomatic). However, more investigations and clinical correlation are required to reach the diagnosis. Please consult your doctor.
