Child Has Mucus And Cough. Taken Benadryl, Ventolin, Aeroflux. Reason?
My child (7 years old) get very mucousy and develops a cough a few days after having dairy or bananas, or immediately after strenuous physical exercise or prolonged laughter. This is from my own observations. He has not tested positive for any allergies - we had him tested at age 5.
It seems he has a cough every few weeks (we first thought it was lactose intolerance, and tried him on lactose free milk, which was okay for a while, and then the coughing started again. Then we tried almond milk. This was okay for a while, then he would develop the cough and post nasal drip again). No cough medicine works past the 2nd use. Benadryl worked for a while, but that doesn't do much for the cough now either.
The pediatrician says she doesn't hear wheezing, but she thought he might have asthma anyway. He was prescribed ventolin syrup (he finished the bottle), which didn't help the cough much, though cough was only apparent in the morning and at nights. He is now on aeroflux (day 5 of 7) and so far, so good. But every time he sneezes, there is this thick mucus. And he sounds stuffy. So, here are my questions:
- why is he still stuffy and mucousy?
- do you think this is asthma or an undetected allergy?

there may not be allergies butafter withdrawing milk and diary completely from diet can clear his cough after 3-4 week of withdrawl
as per milk theory bresat milk is required for 2 years and after that no milk as the milk contain animal proteins and thety are non competible with human proteins after adding milk and diary child start get different problems of any system and as it is always misdiagnosed the child problems go on increasing with age
withdraw all milk and diary completely even soaps shampoo and creams as mostly they contain milk
wait for 4 wk to get results
cacan give montelucast 5 mg bd
and brochodilator and antiallergic syp till then as supportive therapy

Its difficult to its asthma at this age with the symptoms you are telling even though these problem occur in asthma.And you have not taken even 1st line treatment for asthma. Does his parents has asthma or atopic dermatites or he has allergic rhinites. If yes the chances of asthma are more. I think you got done skin prick test for allergens and found negative. Thats good.
I advice daily breathing exercise or pranayama. Next you can try our Tab Montelukast plain 5 mg (Singulair) without any combination once daily in evening for three months (No significant side effects, being used worldwide more than a decade) or Inhalational steroid with spacer (Budesonide). And warm up exercise before going to play and B1 agonist like solbutamol SOS. This will treat your child. These are 1st line management for pediatric asthma by PRACTALL guidelines. If no improvement with in 2 months then we have to think of alternative diagnosis. Consult only pediatric pulmonologist for management. Take care of your child.
