Nephrotic syndrome does not have any permanent treatment.Minimal change disease ( a variety of nephrotic syndrome ) is present in most of the cases.in your child also this disease seems to be present.this disease is notorious for its recurrence but after the age of 12 years this disease is cured by itself.so till that age you will have to bear with it.steroid ( omnacortil ) being its only first line medicine is given in its all episodes.yes this medicine causes wieght gain and have some other side effects too but if you remain in expert consultation you need not to worry.

Pediatrician Dr. NEERAJ ARORA's  Response
Thanks for posting on HCM. As mentioned, your son has nephrotic syndrome and as per his age and response to treatment, he is most probably a patient of Minimal Change Disease. This disease is characterised by > 80% responsiveness to steroids and > 80% chances of remission of the disease, which means that you need not worry much about permanent cure of the disease. Most of the children who come to my OPD with Minimal Change Disease remit spontaneously by age 10 years.
Steroids are the main modality of treatment in nephrotic syndrome. Other agents that can be used in the treatment of Nephrotic syndrome like Mycophenolate moefetil,Leflunomide, Cyclophosphamide are more toxic than steroids. However, steroids can have side effects like increased appetite and weight gain, gastritis (nexpro deceases gastritis), decreased immunity, cataract, decreased bone density etc. i think, we can positively hope for the spontaneous remission of the disease by 10 years. If your son has these episodes beyond 10 yrs, he might need further investigations.
Regards.
