Thanks for posting on HCM. As mentioned, your son has
nephrotic syndrome and as per his age and response to treatment, he is most probably a patient of
Minimal Change Disease. This disease is characterised by > 80% responsiveness to steroids and > 80% chances of remission of the disease, which means that you need not worry much about permanent cure of the disease. Most of the children who come to my OPD with Minimal Change Disease remit spontaneously by age 10 years.
Steroids are the main modality of treatment in nephrotic syndrome. Other agents that can be used in the treatment of Nephrotic syndrome like Mycophenolate moefetil,
Leflunomide,
Cyclophosphamide are more toxic than steroids. However, steroids can have side effects like increased appetite and weight gain, gastritis (nexpro deceases gastritis), decreased immunity, cataract, decreased
bone density etc. i think, we can positively hope for the spontaneous remission of the disease by 10 years. If your son has these episodes beyond 10 yrs, he might need further investigations.
