Child Have Diaper Rash. Have Been Applying Desitin But Not Off Use. What To Do?
My 4 yo son had a severe diaper rash (raw and sometimes bleed and extremely sensitive to touch/wiping) after not wiping properly at day care. The diaper rash is gone, but after 2 weeks he still has a recurring sore around the anus. He will wake up some mornings crying because it hurts so bad. He still wears a pull up to bed. I've been applying desitin, but I think that is just soothing not healing. What should I do?
The desitin will help to coat the area and provide a barrier and should present it from worsening.
If there is a secondary infection to the area then it may be inhibiting healing of the area. The infection may be antibacterial or antifungal. Since diaper rash is most commonly associated with a fungal rash you can try treating for this first.
This would involve obtaining an over the counter anti fungal cream to apply to the area. In addition you may want to use a mild over the counter steroid cream like hydrocortisone for about 2 days to reduce the inflammation in the area.
