Child Having Lipoma By Birth, Dark Red On Elbow, Spreading. What Is The Treatment?

Hi Dr. Santosh, our today 4 month old Baby - Girl was born with what some people and Doctors here call Lipoma . It is dark red and located inside her right elbow . What makes us wonder is that this abnormality is moving, leaving light red marks. Most people say just leave it alone, it will go away by itself, if it breaks open surgery will be needed. Could you please give your opinion as we do not have access too many Doctors because we are living in the country in Indonesia. Thanks for your help! Klaus Ebel

Pediatrician 's  Response
dear Kebel,
I am really concerned that your child is suffering from swelling in right elbow. From the description you give it looks like hemangioma as lipoma is not dark red in color. Hemangiomas are caused by abnormal blood vessels under skin. They may increase in size during initial 6-12 mths but later they shrink and regress by 7 years of age.
Its not an emergency but it need to be shown atleast once to a good doctor. If doctor confirms it to be hemangioma, then you need not worry its going to be alright. Take care.
