Child Having Stomach Ache, Vomiting. Reason?

My four year old has been complaining of a stomach ache and has been vomiting cyclically for several hours now. The vomit is either bland food he has just eaten, or he will retch up what looks like phlegm . There is no fever . He will fall sleep between cycles for about 30 minutes before waking up crying of his tummy aching and vomiting again.

hi

thanks for writing to health care magic

there are various causes of vomitings

it could be simple gastroenteritis

it could be obstruction of intestines in which case there will be abdominal distension some times

gastroentiritis is the most common cause
antiemetics are given to control vomitings

rehydrating the child is important during vomitings

hope this helps

Hi there,

Thanks for writing in.

It is quite possible that your child might have a GI infection (gastro intestinal infection). Most of the times , it is self limiting.

You could give him rice gruel with a pinch of salt. It will provide the necessary fluid and electrolytes. In addition you could give him ORS ( oral rehydration solution) like pedialyte as and when he is thirsty.

How many times has he vomited so far? If the vomiting and stomach pain persists, or if fever or loose stools appear, please take him to a paediatrician.

Hope your son feels better soon.

Hi,
Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic,
Your child seems to have acute gastritis which is causing pain and vomitings.
If the child had similar episodes in the past it could be due to cyclical vomiting.
You can give antiemetic like ondansetron in prescribed dosage to stop vomitings.
Give sips of oral rehydration fluids to prevent dehydration and watch for signs of dehydration.
Consult your Pediatrician if there is no improvement in symptoms.
Hope I have answered your query.
