General & Family Physician, Dr. Nirmala P's Response
Hi, thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic
The hyper salivation in tonsillitis occurs as a result of inability to swallow saliva rather than excessive production. The enlarged inflamed tonsils causes both pain and difficulty in swallowing and so your child is unable to swallow his saliva . This has resulted in reduced clearing of saliva and drooling.
Most common causative agent for tonsillitis is Streptococcus species. It can also be caused by virus infection. Being a lymphoid organ, its own self defense immune mechanism can clear the infection if it is less severe. But repeated infection of tonsils reduces this defense mechanism and necessitates therapy.
Antibiotics like Cefadroxil twice a day for 7 days will hamper the infection. Ibuprofen - Paracetamol suspension will reduce the inflammation of tonsils. Your treating Dr will know about these drugs.
Give plenty of warm milk, food and water although it may be difficult for him to swallow . Avoid cool food.
If the pain becomes more severe with increased salivation and dribbling, then it may be due to peri tonsillar abcess (pus around tonsils) or Quincy which necessitates immediate drainage of pus.

Hi, Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic. In children with throat infection because of pain child feels difficulty in swallowing of oral secretion so that it will present as salivation. Continue the medication as advised by your Pediatrician. Watch for any danger sings and symptoms like stridor, respiratory distress, bluish discoloration and if you find any immediately report to emergency. Consult your Pediatrician again if there is no response to medication. Hope I have answered your query. Regards.
