Child On Dianette. No Improvement And So On Tetralysal. Can Both The Medicines Be Taken Simultaneously?

My daughter who is 15 almost 16 was on dianette for 2 months to help with moderate acne, I brought her back to the doctor after 2 months because there was only a slight improvement, he took her off dianette and put her on tetralysal, after a week it is starting to show some improvement, but she has asked if she could go back on dianette as her periods were bad before and now at least she knows when she is due, would it be ok for her to start taking the dianette again along side the tetralysal

Hi.
Thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Dianette contains Ethinyl Estradiol and Cyproterone Acetate. It is a oral contraceptive pill approved for the treatment of acne. Cyperoterone Acetate has anti androgenic property and is effective only in acne influenced by androgen. OCP can result in many side effects in the long run like increase in weight, thrombo embolism and so on and hence is not suitable for young girls unless indicated.

Also, you have mentioned that it was only moderately effective. So I think it can be better avoided. Tetralysal is Lymecycline, an antibiotic used to control the infections that are responsible for the formation of pustules. Topical preparations like Azelaic acid will be effective in acne with minimal side effects.

Avoid excessive washing with harsh soaps. Avoid oily sunscreens and use water based or non comedogenic products on face. Citrus fruits, apple and grapes when applied topically remove dead skin cells and unclog the pores. Zinc supplements will give additional benefit.

I hope this is useful to you.
