Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Child Suffering From Fever, Running Nose, Hoarse Throat. Giving Tylenol. Allergic To Penicillin. Living In Desert. Suggestions?
My daughter (age 4 years old, no known medical problems besides a severe allergy to penicillin) developed a fever 3 days ago. She gets the fever everyday around noon (starting low at around 100 degrees) and then it slowly progresses to 102 by late afternoon. I have been giving her children's Tylenol once it gets in the 101 range. Other symptoms include: lethargy, irritability, hoarse throat, watery glazed eyes and eye discharge. She has also had profuse bloody noses for the past week (although I understand this could be unrelated...we live in the desert and the temps have been triple digits all week). My question is: at what point should I take her to the doctor? It's now the beginning of the weekend so a regular doctor appointment is not possible until Monday. Should I call at that point if the symptoms are the same or should I take her to an urgent care or care clinic sooner? Thanks!
The symptoms that you have described suggests that your daughter is having a viral upper respiratory tract infection. The bleeding from the nose can be a part of the infection which is causing crusting of the nostrils. You can add a decongestant cough syrup and observe for another day or two. In case the fever does not get controlled and/or other symptoms develop then you should consult your doctor.
I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.
