Child Suffering From Viral Symptoms. Giving Antibiotics. Temperature Alternating Between 38 And 40. Forehead Appears Enlarged. Reason?

4 year old daughter had virual symptoms(slight temp other cold symptoms), saw gp. given antibiotic script to be used if symptoms worsened over the next few days. temp spike to 40 degrees c with paracetamol. commenced antibiotics. (2 doses given & alternating paracetamol & nurophan alternately). temp alternates between 38 & 40 degrees. her forehead appears enlarged in comparison to usual. is this ok or is something wrong??

Hi and thanks for the query,

The temperature you describe shall rarely be viral. It most likely that a bacterial infection be excluded in this case. A careful clinical evaluation needs to be dine. Enlarged forehead might be just subjective or a sign of an infection. A complete clinical review with a lung and abdominal examination could help in identifying the source of the infection. A complete blood count is important to see if the white blood cells are raised or not. raised white blood could signify a bacterial infection. Blood cultures and urine cultures could be very useful in identifying the particular germ that could be causing the infection.

I suggest you consult your primary care physician or pediatrician if possible. In the meantime, give paracetamol to reduce fever for excessive fevers in children can lead to convulsion. Kind regards.
