Chin Injury, Swelling, Ear Issues. Is This Something Serious?

Hello, my granddaughter ,age 14, got hit on the chin with a softball last night(bruised, swollen can actually see the imprint of the strings fo the ball) it was a pretty got hit. The concern I have is that she can't hear out of her left ear since then. Just a result of getting her "bell" rung or something more serious? Thank you for any advice you can offer

Hello and welcome to HCM,

The soft ball has caused an obvious injury on the chin. It has resulted in swelling over the chin.
Since, there is problem in hearing after the hit there can an injury on the ear also.
The ball could have hit the ear region also.

The hearing needs to be evaluated.
You need to consult an ENT specialist for clinical examination and relevant investigations.
The hearing is affected in case the tympanic membrane (ear drum) is ruptured, the ossicular chain is disrupted, or the inner ear is injured. If any of these cause is present, it can be treated surgically.

Thanks and take care.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Hearing loss is one of the potential complications of head injury. In most persons it resolves after a few weeks though it may persist for longer in some persons.

It would be best if she visits an ENT doctor for assessment to determine the exact of the problem so that any appropriate treatment can be initiated.

I hope this helps
