Cholesterol Level, Is To High ?

Today My Dr. told me I had Cholesterol level 6.9, he also told me this was high. How high is high, is this very very worryingly high, or just it s okay ish kind of high. and What the hell do I do to lower it. I am 41, overweight, not sure of what to eat and what not to eat. Is it the exercising or the losing weight that is important to High Cholesterol.
