Hi n thanks i just saw my dr n my ldl is132 and hdl 35 im 48 and take diovan for high blood. pressure . ... do i really need statin drug .. Dr is really pushing i am very reluctant. .. Can u please advised. . Also i hav both parents with heart issues... O also smoke about half pack daily is there any other options i have also im overweight by fifty pounds n dont exercise
Dear Sir Thanks for your query to us. Starting statins in a patient depends upon a number of factors. You have 4 out of the 5 recognized factors by which we calculate target LDL. That indicates that your LDL cholesterol at least should be less than 130 mg%. However if you have diabetes, angina, ischemic stroke, renal failure. aortic or carotid artery disease, peripheral vascular disease or if your risk for cardiovascular disease in next 10 years is > 20%, it should be less than 100 mg%. Hence you need to see which is your target level. Statins need to be started only if your level is at least 30 more than your target or you have some other pressing indication.
