Hi,
Normally the common cold remains for almost 7-10 days and after that only it regress completely. As common cold is a viral infection and there is no role of antibiotic treatment. Most of the time symptomatic treatment is all that required in the form of anti fever drugs like paracetamol and antihistaminic for the the irritating allergic symptoms and congestion. Sometimes some cough syrups are also used for cough suppression.
Apart from drug treatment non pharmacological measures are also very important. One important thing is take proper rest during the viral cold and take plenty of water. Apart form this steam inhalation is also very good for the viral infection in common cold.
But sometime use of antibiotics are also required when there is some feature of bacterial infection and your condition is deteriorating. This can be confirmed with the consultation of your physician and if there is really some requirement, you should take the antibiotics also. Type of antibiotics are selected according to the using pattern of that area and regulation.
Thanks and take care.
