Constant Pain In Leg After Placing Titanium Rod After Shattered Femur. Can We Remove Rod After Healing?

My husband and I were in an accident 4 years ago and he had his femur shattered. They had to put a titanium rod in it. Since then he has had constant pain in the leg. From the knee where they put in 2 screws and the hip where there is a screw. Also, pain where there the breaks were and small pieces of the bone were loose but large enough to leave in and hopefully regrow into the femur. Last x-ray it looked like it was all healed but with lumps where the bone pieces were not in a straight line with the rest of the femur. Would you recommend taking out the rod? Or some other kind of pain relief besides pain blocking pills. He won't take them due to the side affects and dependence with them.
