Constipation, Abdominal Pain, Nausea, Sleepy. Taking Home Enema, Now Having Small Bowel Movement

My daughter has suffered constipation manytimes and currently is suffering symptoms similar. Such ad abdominal pain nauseau and now she says her heart hurts. She has no fever and isn t vomiting. This is day three and Im wondering if these symptoms are commen in constipation. She is sleeping but wakes up periodicly with discomfort. I gave her a home enema which produced a small bowel movement which seemed to relieve some discomfort but she has woken up saying her heart hurts and there is still some abdominal discomfort. She is 13. Any ideas?

Hi there,

Thank you for choosing HCM for your query.
I ll try to answer your query as best possible.

As you mentioned that your daughter has suffered from constipation in the past and currently is having abdominal discomfort and is nauseous as well.

It seems like she has had chronic constipation and may not be emptying her bowels completely. For long term to prevent chronic constipation, there are several steps that can be easily followed:
-Encourage her to drink lots of water- atleast 10-12 glasses of plain, unflavored water.
-Encourage her to be physically active- like going for a walk or any other physical activity.
-Increase the amount of fiber in her diet like having lots of salad in her diet.
-Try to avoid cheese in daily routine.
-Avoid any soda (soft drinks).
-And to regularize her bowel movements, she might want to take an over the counter laxative daily or as prescribed by her physician.

To tackle the present situation, it seems like she has stool impaction and so is having symptoms of abdominal pain and nausea, for which she will need a bowel clean out. I would suggest you consult your physician for the same, so she can be examined and prescribed the right medication for the same.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
