Could Micardis Increase Weight?

I have been taking Micardis for the last few months and my weight has risen significantly. is there a link? Before taking the medicine I never really worried about my weaight which was in the normal zone. Now I have gained 14 pounds, even though I walk about 5 miles a day and gor to the gym. Many thanks, Sue

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Ms.Sue,

Thanks for asking!

Micardis is a drug used for high blood pressure. The active ingredient of this medicine is telmisartan. From the literature and in my experience, I have never come across any patient putting on weight after starting telmisartan.

The best way to confirm this is to consult with your physician, if there is no other obvious cause of weight gain and stop the medication to see if the weight gain problem subsides. Meanwhile you could be on an alternative anti-hypertensive agent.
