Could A Blockage In Carotid Artery Can Cause Frequent Falls?
Hi...My mom has had 3 falls in the past 1 1/2 mos. The first we attributed to her tripping on a rug but now we are not so sure that happened. She fell in the bathroom getting up off the toilet and fell getting off of a chair. She has no warning. She says she does nto lose consciousness but we think she may for a second or two before realizing that she is falling. The last fall she hit her head and shattered a window. We are seeing a cardio this week. She does not take medication. Her carotid artery was 82% blocked last year and cardio said to wait till its 90%. Could a clog carotid cause this? Also her blood pressure taken in succession was lying 160/80 sitting on end of bed 145/80 and then standing 132/72. A quick decrease in bp. any thoughts?
It sounds like a Carotid artery stenosis with also an element of Postural Hypotension. Carotid artery stenosis should classically lead to either sudden onset blindness in one eye or weakness of any of the limbs or Transient ischemic attacks in which there could be falling attacks or brief losses of consciousness. I advise you to get her investigated again with a Color Doppler of the Carotids or a CT Angiography and get her treated if the blockage is more than 50%. She can either undergo surgery which is the ideal treatment or a Stenting of the blocked area which is a minimally invasive Endovascular procedure. Let me know if any further help is required. Take care, Dr Rishi.
