Could A Car Accident Contribute To Bilateral Inguinal Hernia?
I was involved in a car accident. Shortly before the accident, I went through my annual physical. One of the things they always check, I'm 54, is for hernia. No symptoms. After the wreck, I felt discomfort. It gradually evolved over the next couple of months into pain. I got it check and I was diagnosed with a bilateral inguinal hernia. I was wearning a seatbelt. Could the accident contributed to the hernia?
Hi. Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Since hernia has developed over couple of months ago which was not present during annual health check up before car accident, it would be interesting to know that it can occur or be assisted to occur due to car accident as you had seat belt. If the accident involved sudden increase in intra-abdominal pressure it might possible contribute for instigation or enhancement of the pre-existing problems. Hence get the following done: Watch for another factors that enhance the problems like chronic coughing, constipation needing straining, any exercises or activities that can increase the intra-abdominal pressure can cause hernia. If present on both sides , it is better to get an appointment for surgery and get the defect corrected.
